Innovative Heart Disease Treatments

TAVI stands for transcatheter aortic valve implantation.

TAVI is a minimally invasive technique that includes inserting a new aortic valve through a catheter inside the damaged valve. Aortic stenosis, a condition in which the aortic valve narrows and reduces blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body, is commonly treated using TAVI. Due to its less invasive nature and ability to be carried out under local anesthesia, TAVI has grown in popularity in recent years. Interventional cardiologist Cardiologist suggests TAVI to his patients who are poor surgical candidates.

Left Ventricular Assist Device

A surgically inserted device called an LVAD improves the heart's ability to pump blood. Patients with severe heart failure who are awaiting a heart transplantor who are not strong candidates for one are treated with the LVAD. Blood from the left ventricle is taken and pumped into the aorta by the LVAD, bypassing the frail heart muscle. The patient wears an external battery pack around their waist to power the device.

 Mitral Clip

The mitral valve, which is situated between the left atrium and left ventricle of the heart, is repaired with a device called a Mitra Clip. A tiny incision in the groin is used to guide a catheter, which is used to insert the device, to the heart. The mitral valve's leaflets are clipped together after the device is in position, which lessens the volume of blood that travels backwards through the valve. Mitral regurgitation, a disease in which blood flows back into the left atrium rather than forward into the left ventricle, is treated using the Mitra Clip.

Uses of genes

Delivering healthy genes to the heart to replace or repair damaged genes is a potential new approach to treating heart disease. Restoring the heart's natural function and lowering the risk of heart failure are the two objectives of gene therapy. Although gene therapy is still in its infancy, investigations in animal models and human clinical trials have yielded encouraging results.
